Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS)

BBPS is an interoperable ecosystem by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for bill payment that is accessible, ‘anytime, anywhere’ to customers across India. The National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI) has been authorised by the RBI as the BBPCU in BBPS. It has four key participants - Billers, Agents and two regulated participants, BBPCU and BBPOU.

  • Bharat Bill Payment Central Unit (BBPCU)

    Authorized by RBI to operate the BBPS and set necessary operational, technical and business standards for the entire ecosystem. The entity also undertakes clearing and settlement activities.

  • Bharat Bill Payment Operating Unit (BBPOU)

    Entities authorized by RBI to on-board Billers and Agent institutions, to conduct bill payment and aggregation in BBPS.

  • Billers

    Entities that have recurring collections from customers. They are on-boarded and participate in the BBPS through a Biller BBPOU (BOU).

  • Agent Institutions

    Service providers that enable bill payment, collection and aggregation for customers. They connect in the BBPS through a Customer BBPOU (COU).
